Book review: Shalimar The Clown

May 23rd, 2009

Salman Rushdie was more a name in the news for me than an author – until I picked up and devoured Shalimar the Clown. Now I have to read more. Rushdie is an amazing storyteller with an absolutely amaziing knowledge about world cultures. Specifically we follow the story of two families, one Muslim and one Hindo in the far reaches of Kashmir – caught between the conflict of religions, cultures and the countries of India and Pakistan. The adventure takes us to France, Los Angeles, and, of course, Kashmir. It took me a while to get into the story with all the unusual names and places, but it was more than worth the effort. Rushdie is simply a world class writer, every sentence and every page is proof.
